Overweight and insulin resistance may contribute to LADA, a form of type 1 diabetes, according to results of a study by Dr. Sofia Carlsson and her fellow researchers from Stockholm.
38,800 initially diabetes-free Norwegians participated in two surveys: a baseline study from 1984 to 1986, and a follow-up study from 1995 to 1997. During the eleven-year period between the two surveys, 18 people developed type 1, 81 developed LADA, and 738 developed type 2.
Increased age, overweight, and physical inactivity proved to be as strong risk factors for LADA as for type 2 diabetes, suggesting a role for insulin resistance in the development of LADA. In light of the current obesity epidemic, the findings indicate that increasing rates of LADA may be forthcoming.
