Cinnamon Sunk in Latest Type 1 Diabetes Study

Back in 2003, a study in Diabetes Care showed that in thirty people with type 2 diabetes, one to six grams of cinnamon daily for forty days resulted in a drop in blood sugar levels, triglycerides, and LDL (bad cholesterol)...

But a new study, also published in Diabetes Care, has found that cinnamon doesn’t do a thing, at least for type 1 adolescents. The researchers gave 72 type 1 teens one gram of cinnamon daily in addition to their usual routine. After ninety days, the adolescents experienced no change in A1c’s, insulin requirements, or number of low blood sugar episodes.  In fact, the matching group of teens who received a placebo actually did a little better than the cinnamon group, though not significantly so.

This is an article about type 1 diabetes which is what I have. I also have a thyroid disorder and tripped over some information on how cinnamon might help me with insulin resistance because type 1s get it too over time. Also, cinnamon helps with weight loss and when you have a thyroid disorder and low hormones your weight goes up.

However, why is it that type 2s have to weigh in on this? It's NOT about people with type 2 diabetes. The diseases are similar in that both groups work to lower high glucose levels, but the causes are different. I'm happy it works for you all but that has nothing to do with my version of diabetes it seems.

Even in the title it's clear this is regarding type 1 diabetes. So why is it I've read through all of the comments and most of the people are talking about type 2 when the article isn't even about type 2 diabetics?

There are a few articles that talk about cinnamon's positive effect on type 2s. We know this already.

I want to hear from people with type 1 diabetes, so if you have type 2 find an article about cinnamon's effect on type 2 diabetics and leave this be. From this study it seems there is no effect with type 1s. Maybe it's just more complicated with us because we don't produce insulin anymore, so it would depend on diet too. I'll be adding it to my beverages just to see. I figure it won't hurt. I just won't expect the 20% drop in glucose levels I've heard about for type 2s.

Hi everyone, I have type1 since i was 10
Seriously I just started today taking one cup with bowling water of cinnamon and now that i read this it makes me wanna give up lol, cause it seems to work with type 2 but not type 1, why? and i do have a problem losing my belly so if cinnamon really does that i would to keep on trying it anyway I will see, I will keep on going with it :P

Hi,I am a Type 1 also w/Hypothyroidism. I started taking cinnamon about 2 weeks ago. Of course 90% of the information was on Type 2's so I was happy to find this article for Type 1 but was hoping for better results. Like the other person I don't really understand why/how things work for type 2 and not necessarily for type 1, it's confusing. Like the first person I agree, if we are talking about Type 1 feedback from type 2 isn't needed. Isn't it enuff that 99% of research dollars go towards type 2 when some diet, exercise and common sense would go alot further?

This article said there was no effect on adolescents' blood sugar. I'm interested in whether it would help cholesterol and triglycerides for a middle aged type 1 diabetic. (The original study (on type 2's) said it did help cholesterol & triglyceride in addition to the blood sugar.) Any studies on this for type 1's?
