On May 30, 2007, prosecutors dropped the assault charges against Doug Burns, the champion bodybuilder whom we profiled extensively last month. The decision to dismiss the case and not go to trial was based upon evidence from an endocrinologist that Doug was in diabetic shock at the time of the incident and therefore had a viable defense of unconsciousness.
The news was heralded by the diabetic community, which, with the encouragement of diabetes blogger Amy Tenderich, had bombarded the DA’s office with calls protesting the possibility that Doug might go to trial.
Doug hopes to use his harrowing experience as the starting point for positive education of public servants about diabetes. He has already set up a conference with personnel at the ADA to begin work on a training video to educate police departments about hypoglycemia.
