Risk of Diabetes Rising High In Construction Workers
An ongoing study of 1,000 construction workers in Ireland has revealed a problem: Of the 450 who have been tested to date, nearly half are overweight, ten percent are pre-diabetic, and a number have been discovered to have type 2 diabetes.
The Construction Workers Health Trust, which is carrying out the study, reports that 42 percent of construction workers smoke (compared to 25 percent of the general population), and over a third have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or both.
Moreover, sixty percent have high waist-to-hip ratios, indicating the big belly that is a risk factor for both diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Clearly, there's need for some constructive action to address this building concern.
