A study published in the August 2007 Lancet examined 8291 Italians who'd recently had a heart attack. Three years later, a full third of them had developed either type 2 diabetes or impaired fasting glucose.
The findings underscore the close relationship between heart attack and high blood sugar, each of which is apparently a risk factor for the other.
The researchers also found that three changes - quitting smoking, not gaining weight, and eating a Mediterranean diet - substantially lower the increased risk of diabetes that follows a heart attack.
