Number of U.S. Adults Diagnosed With Diabetes: 15.1 million

Breakdown of U.S. Adult Cases of Diabetes by Ethnicity:

  • African-American females: 13.2 percent
  • Mexican-American males: 11 percent
  • Mexican-American females: 10.9 percent
  • African-American males: 10.7 percent
  • Non-Hispanic white males: 6.7 percent
  • Non-Hispanic white females: 5.6 percent

Increase in new diagnoses of diabetes between 1995 and 2004: 23 percent

Increase in the number of U.S. adults living with diabetes between 1995 and 2004: 62 percent

Worldwide sales of oral anti-diabetic drugs: $11 billion+ annually.
