Power to Prevent’s curriculum was developed by the NDEP’s African American Work Group. It's designed for community leaders but people with diabetes can also use it independently.
The National Diabetes Education Program has developed a curriculum designed to provide program leaders with the tools they need to increase diabetes prevention and control within African American communities.
Power to Prevent: A Family Lifestyle Approach to Diabetes Prevention is a product of the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP), a joint effort of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
More than three million African Americans aged 20 years and older have diabetes. African Americans are 1.6 times more likely to have diabetes than non-Hispanic whites of the same age.
Power to Prevent provides community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, diabetes educators, and other program leaders with a step-by-step, easy-to-read resource that best reaches their target audience.
People with diabetes can also use this curriculum independently.
The curriculum consists of twelve 60- to 90-minute interactive modules that trained or untrained facilitators can use to guide small groups through discussions on physical activity, nutrition, and diabetes prevention. It also provides a guide for program leaders that discusses steps for a successful program.
The curriculum was developed by the NDEP's African American Work Group, which includes representatives from national minority organizations and medical and government organizations that develop culturally appropriate initiatives and promote diabetes education campaigns for African American audiences.
Power to Prevent and other free diabetes education materials can be downloaded or ordered at yourdiabetesinfo.org (shipping and handling fees will apply) or by calling 1-888-693-NDEP.
