Today is not the first World Diabetes Day. This day was designated World Diabetes Day in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO). It has been celebrated each year on November 14 since then.
With the passage of a United Nations Resolution on Diabetes in 2006, this day also became an official UN Day like World AIDS Day.
2007 was the first year the global diabetes community marked World Diabetes Day by lighting buildings and monuments across the world in blue. The buildings are lit in blue because it is the color of the global diabetes symbol—the blue circle.
Blue was chosen as the color of the circle because it is the color of the UN flag and the sky that unites us all.
