Joseph M. and JoAnn M. Murphy, emeritus co-chairs of the Berrie Diabetes Advisory Committee, were instrumental in establishing the Christopher J. Murphy Professorship in Diabetes Research at the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center at Columbia University Medical Center.
The professorship commemorates the Murphys' son, Christopher, who died in 2001 from cardiovascular complications of type 1 diabetes. According to a CUMC press release, the Murphys and a group of family members and friends created the research professorship in recognition of Chris' dedication and commitment to finding a cure for diabetes.
Dr. Rudolph L. Leibel, M.D. was chosen as the first Christopher J. Murphy Professor. He is an internationally recognized expert on the regulation of body weight and the molecular genetics of type 2 diabetes.
Mr. and Mrs. Murphy have given tremendous support and leadership to CUMC. Their generosity to diabetes initiatives totals in excess of $4 million. The Murphys have also pledged current-use funding to meet the Berrie Center's most critical needs for clinical and research programs.
