The story follows Ed Devlin, a fifteen-year-old boy whose family and social life are falling apart. When he’s diagnosed with type 1, he struggles not only to decipher his illness, but also to get the rest of his life back together.
Eric Devine, a 30-year-old English teacher and writer who's lived with type 1 diabetes for 18 years, has written a young adult novel, This Side of Normal, that will be published this month by Long Tale Press.
Here's a brief description of the plot: Ed Devlin has problems. His parents haven't gotten along since Ed's uncle died. His father drinks too much, and his mother has all but given up on her spouse. Ed's best friend has no time for him because he's too busy chasing a girl more likely to end up in jail than at graduation. And on top of all that, Ed is beginning to realize something is wrong with his body.
Ed's life is going to change, but not in any way he imagines. It's going to get a whole lot worse before it gets any better. Just like all the rest, he'll find that his health problem is beyond his control. It will overwhelm him and force him to find a way through. Force him to become someone new.
The book can be purchased in soft cover and e-book format from Long Tale Press and Amazon after March 20. For more information, please visit Eric Devine's blog and Long Tale Press
