Teens Make A Difference For Diabetes

Daniel Fine, 15, of West Windsor, New Jersey, a sophomore at the Peddie School in Hightstown, spearheaded a youth-run fundraising campaign that has collected more than $40,000 to find a cure for juvenile diabetes, a disease that afflicts his younger brother, Jake.

Alexa Brenner, 12, of Gig Harbor, Washington, a seventh-grader at Annie Wright School in Tacoma, has dedicated much of her life over the past six years to increasing public awareness about juvenile diabetes and raising money to find a cure. Alexa, who was diagnosed with the disease when she was a baby, told her parents when she was in first grade that she wanted to form a team to walk in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's annual "Walk for a Cure." She recruited walkers to join "Alexa's Athletes," wrote letters soliciting donations, spoke to school and community groups, and sold pins and bracelets.

Madison Dodge, 13, of Milford, Delaware, an eighth-grader at Milford Middle School, has raised more than $40,000 for diabetes research and treatment over the past eight years and has worked tirelessly to educate others about the importance of finding a cure. After Madison was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age five, "I made it my personal mission to do all that I could to help raise money for a cure and to help people affected with diabetes in any way that I can," she said.

These amazing teens-selected from 20,000 entries nationwide-were named State Honorees (along with 102 other state winners throughout the U.S.) in the 14th annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a national program honoring middle and high school students for their outstanding acts of volunteerism. The program is conducted by Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Over the past 14 years, they have honored more than 80,000 young volunteers at the local, state, and national levels.
