Thanks to sponsorship from the Medtronic Foundation, the Diabetes Education and Camping Association (DECA) and the Diabetes Camp Leadership Development Council (DLEAD) are offering a diabetes retreat for young people with type 1 diabetes who are between the ages of 18 and 25. The retreat, which will take place at Villanova University from May 29th to 31st, is completely free and includes accommodations, meals, and participation in activities. All you have to provide is your own travel and incidentals. Join them for an awesome weekend!
The purpose of the program is to serve young people from the ages of 18 to 25 who have type 1 diabetes and are facing the challenges of transitioning to adulthood. By providing support, cooperative educational programs, and tools for healthy living, the retreat will help participants develop positive well-being and supportive social networks. The program will focus on "Four Pillars":
DTREAT will be hosted at Villanova University, 800 Lancaster Avenue, Villanova, PA 19085. The event will last from 3:00 p.m on Friday, May 29, 2009, until 5:00 pm on Sunday, May 31. Attendees will be housed on campus in double occupancy rooms with a shared washroom. All meals will be provided in the dining hall, buffet style.
While at DTREAT, the young adults will have the opportunity to participate in a series of discussion style support groups, workshops, and sessions. Sessions will be led by one or two DLEAD delegates, will follow an open, sharing, casual group discussion format, and will concentrate primarily on diabetes issues, as well as the general life issues that diabetes inevitably ties into. The topics will include emotional well-being, growing up with diabetes, life-skills, insurance options, college and diabetes, work and diabetes, living by yourself, self-confidence in your healthcare, diabetes burn-out, living with a roommate, diabetes and money management, motivation, handling parents fears, and the realities of partying, sex, dating, and stress management.
