2010 Martin Luther King Humanitarian Award
Diabetes Health Magazine (www.diabeteshealth.com), a local Marin Publishing Company, is proud to have successfully nominated Lisa Shenson for a prestigious award. Shenson, a true humanitarian, will be honored by the Marin Human Rights Commission and awarded its 2010 Martin Luther King Humanitarian Award at an annual Gala Dinner on January 21st, and to be held at the Sheraton Four Points in San Rafael. Mother turned activist, Shenson has been fighting for the human and civil rights of children with diabetes, especially in the schools, for over a decade.
The award coincides with the launch of a Website representative of the work that Shenson has been involved in through her arduous and unrelenting journey, fighting for appropriate legislation that meets the immediate needs of children with diabetes in the school.
Her current drive, together with a strong coalition of diabetes organizations and professionals, activists, and supportive parents, is to accomplish the goal of making sure that every child with diabetes is safe at school. Through ground-breaking California legislation that will clarify existing law, the estimated 15,000 children in California public schools will have immediate access at all times to trained, voluntary school personnel - a safe and much needed solution that is consistent with current diabetes care practices, and addresses statewide (and national) reductions in school nursing presence as well as professional nursing shortages.
Nadia Al- Samarrie, Publisher of the Marin-based Diabetes Health commented that it was "a great honor for the magazine to support the nomination of a person who has done so much, by providing tireless support and education to help parents of children with diabetes navigate the many hurdles they face in the public school system."
