Readers: Type 1 Indy Racer Charlie Kimball Needs Your Votes NOW!
Type 1 Charlie Kimball
Charlie Kimball, the first and only driver with type 1 diabetes in the history of the Indy Racing League to race cars at its highest level, needs your help: Just as when he's racing, Kimball finds himself neck-in-neck in a competition. In this case, he's looking to win the Firestone Tire-iffic Award and you can help him out by voting for him---but you only have till Thursday, August 11, to do so.
Kimball is one of thee drivers in August 7's Honda Indy 200 race in Lexington, Ohio, that Firestone has nominated for the $10,000 award. Firestone makes the award to honor a driver who makes a bold, dramatic move during a race while using its tires. (If he wins, Kimball has promised to donate a portion of award to the diabetes community.)
In Kimball's case, the award would go for several things he did last Sunday, including his best qualifying run of the season, running for most of the race in the top 10, and finishing in 11th place, making him the highest-finishing rookie in the race.
Kimball, who drives for the Chip Ganassi Racing Team, raced his No. 83 Levemir and NovoLog FlexPen car for 85 laps over a 2.26-mile, 13-turn course.
To vote for Kimball, go to www.indycar.com and look for the Firestone Tire-iffic Award column halfway down on the right. Kimball's up against two other participants in the race, Scott Dixon and James Hinchcliffe.
