Waltham, MA-Nova Diabetes Care, manufacturer of the Nova Max® Plus glucose/ketone meter, announced that it is helping sponsor the Diabetes Education and Camping Association. Established in 1997, DECA serves as the worldwide voice for diabetes camping. The association provides networking and resources to enhance and expand diabetes camp programs worldwide, and assists diabetes camp organizations by developing guidelines for diabetes education and management. DECA also develops programs that inspire health and confidence in children, young adults, and families affected by diabetes.
As part of its sponsorship, Nova Diabetes Care will attend diabetes camps to offer educational material and free Nova Max Plus Glucose/Ketone meters. The no-coding meters for glucose testing can also be used to monitor blood ketone levels on sick days and whenever glucose is elevated, as recommended by the American Diabetes Association. Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is the most common cause of hospitalization and death in children with diabetes. Studies show that hospitalizations caused by DKA have been reduced by 50 percent when ketones are tested in the blood compared to ketones tested in urine.
Lorne Abramson, Executive Director of DECA, says, "We are so pleased that Nova Diabetes Care will be supporting DECA and its member camps this year. The diabetes camps are the perfect venue to educate the children and their families about the importance of blood ketone testing as part of their sick-day management to help avert DKA, a potentially life-threatening condition that families can control through diligent monitoring and management."
(Nova Care's toll free customer service line is available 24 hours per day, 365 days per year to answer questions and provide support concerning the use of Nova Max products. For further information, go to www.novacares.com or call the toll-free customer service number 800-681-7390.
