In response to a post that I wrote on October 19, 2012, asking readers to contribute their opinions, John M wrote to me asking for more information. After exchanging a few emails, we came up with an idea that we think you will like: a new column by readers who write in about experiences they have had with diabetes and who are curious to know if anybody else has experienced the same thing. The new column will be called "Have You Noticed This About Your Diabetes?" The idea is for you to send in your question, in response to which other readers will share similar and not-so-similar experiences through our "Comments" section. (Take note that comments take one to two days to post because they all need to be read and approved.)
It is important to keep in mind that diabeteshealth.com is a site by the people and for the people of the diabetes community. What you read here is the opinion of the writers, many of whom are not medical professionals. That's why it's important that you speak to your healthcare professional before changing your therapy on the basis of something you have read. There might be certain considerations that you have not taken into account if you unilaterally decide to change your regimen. My type 2 mother was a great example of this. She did not like the side effects of some of her medications, so she stopped taking them. Shortly thereafter, she had a stroke, and it was downhill from there until her death.
If you have a question that you would like answered by a member of our advisory board or shared with our readers, please email editor@diabeteshealth.com, and write your question in the subject line. And please use the "Comments" feature to add your experiences to those of column contributors who have sent in questions.
Here is John M's question to you about hypoglycemia, the first entry in "Have You Noticed This About Your Diabetes?"
I have discovered a low blood sugar symptom that could be helpful to people who, like me, have hypoglycemic unawareness. At times, when I close my eyes tightly, a dime-sized white spot appears in my vision, like a spot you might see when you close your eyes after staring at a bright light. Seeing that spot has proven to be a definite sign that my blood sugar is below 70 and dropping, even when I have no other symptoms.
I have noticed this ever since I had laser treatment for neovascularization. I mentioned it to my family doctor, my endocrinologist, and two eye doctors, all of whom shrugged and said "Could be," but none of whom has ever encountered it. I'd like to know if other people with diabetes or any medical professionals have heard of or experienced this phenomenon and whether it is worth publicizing. I will look for your feedback in the "Comments" section.
