Students with type 1 diabetes will have more opportunity for higher education thanks to a donation from Lilly Diabetes.
For the second year in a row, the organization is donating $100,000 to the Diabetes Scholars Foundation scholarship fund, designed for young people living with type 1 diabetes. The donation will fund the Lilly Diabetes Tomorrow's Leaders Scholarships as well as scholarships for families to attend the 2013 children with Diabetes Friends for Life conference in Orlando, Fla.
"We are so pleased that Lilly Diabetes continues to support our mission to empower people with type 1 diabetes," says Mary Podjasek, president of Diabetes Scholars Foundation, a non-profit that last year provided dozens of scholarships for college-bound high school seniors. "Life with diabetes is never easy, but through successful partnerships like these we are able to help even more young people with type 1 diabetes follow their dreams."
In 2012, the Lilly Diabetes scholarships were used to support 21 students pursuing higher education.
"Our company and employees believe that people with diabetes should never stop pursuing their dreams, and we are so proud to have helped the standout students selected by the Foundation in 2012," says Steve Sugino, vice president of Lilly Diabetes.
The donation also sent 10 families to the 2012 international Friends for Life conference.
The conference, aimed at children and their families, features exhibits from the top diabetes companies worldwide, along with keynote speakers, performances (the 2012 conference featured "American Idol" alumna Crystal Bowersox), educational programs for children and adults, and the chance to meet thousands of others also living with type 1 diabetes. The 2013 conference in Orlando is set for July 9-14.
To be considered for the scholarship, students must be incoming freshmen at an accredited college or university in the fall of 2013. In addition to showing leadership, community involvement, and participation in a variety of different activities, applicants must provide an essay as well as letters of recommendation from both a physician treating their diabetes and a high school counselor/teacher. Applications, available online at www.diabetesscholars.org, are due May 15, 2013. Recipients will be announced in June.
Applications for conference scholarships for families to attend the 2013 Friends for Life Conference are also available online at www.diabetesscholars.org. Conference scholarship applications are due April 15, 2013, and recipients will be announced in May.
