New Study Links Diabetes to Lower Prostate Cancer Risk

| Mar 25, 2013

A new study shows that men with heart disease who have diabetes may have a lower risk of developing prostate cancer.

The study, conducted at the Sheba Medical Center, Ramat Gan, Israel, included 11,541 men with coronary heart disease. The subjects were divided into four groups:

  1. Subjects had neither diabetes mellitus nor metabolic syndrome, but did have such risk factors for heart disease as high blood pressure, high blood sugar, unhealthy cholesterol levels, and abdominal fat
  2. Subjects who had metabolic syndrome but no diabetes
  3. Subjects who had diabetes but no metabolic syndrome
  4. Subjects who had both diabetes and metabolic syndrome

The men, who were relatively old (median age 59) when screened, were followed up for a relatively long period, more than five years, which gave observers time to note an apparent protective effect from diabetes.

The study investigators said that if a younger group of patients were followed for a shorter time, the protective effect of diabetes might not be fully noted.
