The latest version of the OmniPod insulin pump is more than a third smaller-not much bigger than a ripe raspberry-and 25 percent lighter than the original, but it still offers a 200-unit insulin reservoir as well an updated Personal Diabetes Manager that ensures correct insulin dosages.
The innovative insulin delivery system includes a waterproof insulin pump users can discreetly wear that delivers pre-determined insulin injections based on the users' needs. A hand-held Personal Diabetes Manager contains a food library to help users track carbs and better calculate needed insulin doses. A built-in blood glucose meter erases the need for a separate item.
Experts say that the technologically advanced unit makes diabetes management easier, and since users are more likely to use the right amounts of insulin, they are more likely to achieve better health results.
"When technology can make diabetes management easier for my patients, they have better clinical outcomes," said Dr. Steve Edelman, Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California at San Diego and founder of the organization Taking Control of Your Diabetes, in a press release announcing the FDA approval.
The new OmniPod is expected to be available to consumers in the first quarter of 2013, after officials update health care professionals on the benefits of the new unit.
