Low-carb diets healthier than low-fat for those with type 2

For those who want to control their type 2 diabetes through their diet, a low-carb diet may be more beneficial than a low-fat one, according to the results of a new study.

The Swedish study found that a low-carb diet can help reduce inflammation, which has long been associated with diseases including type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
The two-year study from Linkoping University included 61 patients with type 2 diabetes who were separated into two groups. The first ate a low-carb diet, while the second group ate a low-fat diet.

While both groups lost weight, those on the low-carb diet showed fewer inflammation markers as well as lower blood glucose levels.

While experts have long been recommending a low-fat diet for those with type 2 diabetes, many low-fat foods have hidden sugars or artificial sugars that wreak havoc with both blood sugar levels and insulin.

According to a 2011 study from researchers at the University of Texas as San Antonio, mice that were fed aspartame gained more weight and showed both elevated blood glucose levels and decreased insulin sensitivity compared to a control group.

Researchers believe the artificial sweetener impacts blood glucose because it tricks the brain into believing it is eating something sweet, so it messages for the release of hormones in response to the sweetness. Because there is no sugar to convert, however, the process is disrupted, which can later impact how the body responds to actual sugar.

"These results suggest that heavy aspartame exposure might potentially directly contribute to increased blood glucose levels, and thus contribute to the associations observed between diet soda consumption and the risk of diabetes in humans," lead researcher Dr. Gabriel Fernandes said.

Low-carb foods include vegetables, lean proteins, fruits (especially berries), nuts and seeds, with limited amounts of dairy and whole grains including pasta and cereal.

My husband suffered with type 2 diabetes for over 25 years. In 2003, after reading and studying about diabetes especially reading Dr. Bernstein's book, "Diabetes Solution", Dr. Jonny Bowden's "Living Low Carb", etc., I created a program that I believed my husband could live with. At this point in his life he was morbidly obese, on 43 units of insulin a night, had severe and painful neuropathy in both his feet that limited his walking to 75 feet., had multiple episodes of sleep apnea every hour, profuse night sweats from hypoglycemia (we didn't know at that time that low blood sugar was causing his night sweats) and had a hypoglycemic episode while driving and crashed into the concrete median wall on the interstate. He was irritable and quick to anger which made him difficult to live with. My husband, Dick went on my program of low carb and exercise. Within a few weeks of going on the program, I could feel and see Dick's personality returning! In 3 months he was completely off of insulin and has never looked back. Within 9 months he lost 80 pounds and a short time later lost another 20 pounds for a total weight loss of 100 pounds. The painful neuropathy in both his feet is gone! In 2004 he walked in 2 5K races and finished. In 2011 he walked Disney World from 8:30 A.M. until 11:45 P.M. with only a short 2 hour break in the afternoon (which we all needed). Sleep apnea is gone. Night sweats are gone. Irritability and anger have been replaced by fun and laughter. There have been no hypoglycemic incidents or what we perceived as him falling asleep at the drop of a hat. Since 2003 he has come off of insulin, off of diuretics, off of pain medications, off of statins and the glipizide and metformin that he is on has been cut in half! His fasting blood sugars went from 300, 350, 250 to now typically 90, 86, 99. He looks great, feels great. He celebrated his 75th birthday in February and feels more like 40. As far as my husband and I are concerned the ADA has it all wrong. They are telling you to have 60 to 65% of your meals (each meal) being carbohydrates! That's just insane. Carbs are sugar! Diabetes is a condition where there is too much sugar/glucose in the bloods stream. This is not rocket science. You wouldn't offer an alcoholic a drink or worse yet insist that they have alcohol at each meal, why would you tell a person with diabetes to each sugar at every meal? To cover the large amounts of insulin and medications they are taking? Cut their carbs, educate them about carbs and about diabetes and they may not even need meds or they may only need small doses. Ugh!
Are we actually keeping people sick? I hope not. I do not want to believe that but the evidence about carbs and diabetes is real, it's evidence based and it should be used by doctors in treating diabetes.

I've been saying the same thing thediabeteslady has said. My diabetes nutritionist made me feel guilty when I told her I don't eat fruit anymore because it spikes my BS. I tried it her way for 4 months until my next A1c test and my count was up. I stopped going to the nutritionist and realized that they only follow the ADA's advice which keeps people on the Diabetes merry-go-round. Now my BS is getting back to normal with eating a low carb and high protein way of life.
