Diabetes Health in the News Podcast: Metformin Best For Heart Safety

Metformin is the most frequently prescribed standalone medication for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Now, a new study has found that this drug is actually better for the heart than most of its closest competitors.

This result came after analyzing over 200 studies that involved 1.4 million people. The findings suggest that Metformin reduced the risk of suffering a fatal heart attack or stroke by 30-40% compared to some other commonly used medications, including Glimepiride and Glipizide. This study further proves that Metformin remains one of the most effective and safest medications used to treat type 2 diabetes.

These findings were published in the Annals of Internal Medicine on April 19, 2016.

I stopped taking Metformin over 3 years ago due to side effects.
I get very disappointed when I read selected articles that portray this medication as beneficial to the heart or any other organ. I can produce many articles that contradict these findings.
