Youth with Type 2 Diabetes Face Challenges in Transitioning to Adult Care

A new study has found that for young adults with type 2 diabetes, transitioning from pediatric to adult care can be a dangerous time. This period is often characterized by significantly worsened glycemic control, as type 2 diabetes becomes more difficult to control the longer a patient has the disease. Plus, complication risks also become greater after more time with the disease.

Young patients with type 2 diabetes would benefit from personalized programs to help them transition into adult care. Engagement with other care providers and reasonable goals will help to support young adults during this difficult time, leading to optimal diabetes control and care.

These findings were published in Diabetic Medicine on March 14, 2018.
